CHILD Co-Director Dr. Stuart Turvey wins Career Research Award

The Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) has announced that the 2024 recipient of its Career Research Award is AllerGen investigator Dr. Stuart Turvey, Co-Director of the CHILD Cohort Study (CHILD) and leader of the Study’s Vancouver site.

The biennial Career Research Award, comprised of a plaque and a cash prize, recognizes the career accomplishments of an outstanding Canadian scientist or clinician-scientist working in pediatric research.

According to the CPS, Dr. Turvey was selected for this recognition “both for his research and for mentoring the next generation of child health clinician-scientists.”

“[His] research has changed the practice of clinical immunology and the care of pediatric patients with inborn errors of immunity both in Canada and internationally,” explains the CPS website. “His work focuses on childhood immune deficiency diseases and disorders of immune dysfunction, including asthma, allergies, and autoimmunity… His work is translational, interdisciplinary, and focused on developing precision health approaches to infectious and inflammatory diseases of childhood.”

Dr. Turvey is the eighth honoree since the award’s inauguration in 2009. He was presented the award on 6 June 2024 during a special ceremony at the CPS Annual Conference in Vancouver.

As well as co-directing CHILD and leading its Vancouver site, Dr. Turvey is a Professor of Pediatrics at UBC, where he holds the Aubrey J. Tingle Professorship in Pediatric Immunology. He is also a clinician-scientist and Pediatric Immunologist based at BC Children’s Hospital and holds a Canada Research Chair in Pediatric Precision Health. He was also recently awarded a Killam Research Prize.
