New estimates of food allergy prevalence in Canada

New research by a team of AllerGen investigators has found that 7.5 per cent of Canadians—7.7 per cent of adults and 6.9 per cent of children under 18 years of age—self-report having at least one food allergy.

The estimates are calculated from the nationwide SPAACE survey (Surveying Prevalence of food Allergy in All Canadian Environments), which surveyed 5,734 households, representing over 15,000 individuals, about food allergies.

The research was conducted by a team of AllerGen investigators in partnership with Health Canada, and co-led by Ann Clarke, a professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Calgary, and Susan Elliott, a professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Waterloo. AllerGen trainee Lianne Soller was first author of the related paper, published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice.
